Music

Music is an integral part of every known culture on Earth, reflecting the essence of humanity by expressing emotions, intentions, and meanings. At Raynham, we believe that music education plays a central role in our lives.

As a school subject, music encompasses creativity, social interaction, physical activity, and academic learning. It equips children with a lifelong skill, whether for potential employment in the music industry or for personal enjoyment. Music education also fosters teamwork, self-confidence, and a sense of accomplishment. In a world where instant gratification is prevalent, musical activities, such as learning to play an instrument, teach children the value of patience and persistent practice over time.

We utilise Kapow to assist class teachers in delivering a curriculum that ensures progression in musical skills as outlined in the National Curriculum. This is achieved through the key musical concepts of:

  • Performing
  • Listening
  • Composing
  • The History of Music

Our music curriculum aligns with the National Curriculum, providing progression in musical skills by enabling students to perform and create music using their voices and musical instruments, as well as by exposing them to a variety of music from different times and places. Students also learn musical terminology and notation.

In our school, KS1 and KS2 students have one hour of planned music lessons per week, while Early Years students immerse themselves in music using their surroundings and a variety of instruments and resources to create sounds. Furthermore, we showcase our love for singing through assemblies and Year Group Performances.
